Less is More

Yesterday I made cinnamon bread french toast for breakfast. I have been serving the kids fake syrup for a couple of years since real maple syrup jumped in price. I hate fake syrup. My kids don't seem to care, but I can't stand the taste and the fact that I cannot pronounce most of the ingredients.

So yesterday I made buttermilk syrup. Healthy? Nope. Delicious? Yep. Recognizable ingredients? Yep again.

I like to serve french toast and pancakes with vanilla yogurt or homemade applesauce, but when I do not have those on hand, this is a wonderful alternative. The kids LOVED it.

1 1/2 cups white sugar
3/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 cup butter
2 tablespoons corn syrup
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

In a saucepan, stir together the sugar, buttermilk, butter, corn syrup, and baking soda. Bring to a boil, and cook for 7 minutes. Remove from the heat, and stir in the vanilla. Will keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks.
